In the great Venetian artistic heritage, the image of the Madonna placed at the center of the main altar of the basilica of S. Maria della Salute is very famous.
It arrived from the island of Candia (Crete) on February 26, 1670, brought by Doge Morosini. And on November 21 of the same year it was placed in the niches of the altar.
The candiotti called it Madonna di San Tito because they were convinced that it was painted by San Luca. It was also called Mesopanditissa (“mediator of peace”) because before her the Venetians and the Candiotti family put an end to the war in 1264, after 60 years.
To get to the Basilica of S. Maria della Salute more easily and enjoy a fantastic walk along the Giudecca canal, this November take advantage of the special section of Canal Grande!
